A Day Trip to Lummi Island

Last weekend was hot hot hot by Seattle standards. With our long days in the summertime that means the hot, dry sun rises at 5:30am and bakes our non-air-conditioned house until 10pm when it finally sets. Rather than sit at home and sweat we took a day trip to Lummi Island, part of the San Juan Islands.

First we drove two hours from Seattle on I-5 North towards Bellingham, WA near the border with Canada. Then we parked our car on the mainland side of the ferry terminal and walked on to the ferry for $7 per person round trip. Our dog Kai tagged along. The ferry is tiny compared to the ferries that leave Seattle for Bainbridge Island or Bremerton. It has room for 18 cars and a handful of people.

After arriving, we walked a mile from the ferry dock to the Lummi Island Congregational Church. They have an outdoor worship space in the woods behind the church that leads to a beach they allow the public to use. We had a picnic on the beach and didn’t see a single other person the whole time we were there. It was so calm and absolutely beautiful!

As with everything, one little trip births five more ideas, so I’d like to go back to Lummi Island for biking, hiking, and two of the things it’s famous for–the art and dinner at the award-winning Willows Inn.
